Dr.Mukhtar Nasir - MRCPsych, MBBS, DCP, DPM
Dr. Mukhtar Nasir is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist with special interest in Alcohol &substance misuse and dual diagnosis. He joined focus 12 in February 2009.
Dr.Nasir holds the MRCPsych “membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrist-UK”. He also has a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) and a Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry (DCP). He is a trained and practicing therapist in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy for patients with borderline personality disorders. He is approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act. He is fully registered medical practitioner and is on the GMC specialist register.
He has been working in the field of Mental Health and management of addiction and alcohol problems for over 18 years. He graduated from Faculty of Medicine, university of Khartoum in 1990 and started his Psychiatric training in Sudan before moving to Ireland in 1995 and gained the MRCPsych while working there.
He worked in the Drug Treatment Centre (Trinity Court), Mater Hospital and St.vincent’s Fairview Hospital in Dublin from 1995-1999.
Between July 2001 and December 2001, he worked as a locum consultant Psychiatrist in Navan General Hospital, Co. Navan, Ireland.
He then worked for a period of 1 year (2002) as a Special Lecturer in Psychiatry, University College Dublin/Mater Hospital, before moving to UK.
He has been working for the last 8 years in the NHS at a Capacity of Consultant Psychiatrist. Initially he worked for North Essex Mental Health Partnership from Feb-December 2003 in Clacton-on-sea and Colchester. He then moved to his current post in the Fermoy unit, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn, Norfolk.
His Clinical skills and expertise involve assessment, diagnosing and management of individivuals presenting with various psychological problems, alcohol & drug dependency and harmful use or problems of addictive behaviour. He has managed in-patient and community detoxification and treatment of alcohol, Benzodiazepines, pain killers, Opiates/methadone, Cocaine, ketamine, Cannabis, amphetamines and other illicit substances both pharmacologically and psychologically .He has supervised rapid detoxification with Lofexidine, Naltrexon challenge and managed methadone maintenance clinic and detoxification. He is experience in the management of clients suffering from complications of alcohol dependence and withdrawal, including Korsakoff’s psychosis. He is also experienced in managing detoxification of pregnant women.
He also has extensive experience in assessing, managing and treatment of people with dual diagnosis problems related to either alcohol, drugs, personality disorders or other psychological and mental health difficulties.
Dr.Nasir has extensive experience and skills in assessing, diagnosing and management of treatment resistant mood disorders including various types of anxiety disorders, depression and bipolar affective disorders.
He also has been providing the Medical Lead for West Norfolk Dialectical Behavioural Therapy team in assessing, diagnosing and managing individuals with Borderline personality disorders. He has completed the National training in DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy) and has been a practicing member of West Norfolk DBT team providing both individual and group psychotherapy.
His passion is Postgraduate Medical Education. He is the Programme Director (Norfolk) in Core Psychiatric training (East of England Deanery) and a Clinical Tutor for Norfolk &Waveney Mental Health Foundation Trust. He is a member of the Operational Board, School of Psychiatry, East of England Deanery. He is a member of the CASC examination Board of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a member of the Equivalence Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatrists-UK. He is a Recognised Teacher for undergraduate teaching by University of East Anglia.
His teaching interests include substance misuse, dual diagnosis, Psychopharmacology, treatment resistant mood disorders, Mental Health Act and related laws. He has written articles related to Mental Health and published in Peer reviewed journals. He has delivered numerous invited lectures in these areas in the UK and abroad.
