There is a weekly family support group at 6.15pm every Tuesday evening at Focus12. This is a structured group facilitated by a trained therapist who will provide either a group therapy setting, or occasionally workshops and lectures to try to assist families to come to terms with the addiction in their family and to learn strategies as to how to deal with the issue.
Initially, many families are reluctant to seek help because they are confused or ashamed of what has happened to their family unit. By participating in a group process, people will very quickly realise that there are other people who are going through similar situations. From these people it is possible to learn and to discuss various ways to assist clients to get the help that they need. Many clients have felt bullied or have doubted their sanity in trying to deal with an illness that they have no understanding of. By listening and participating with other group members, family members will very quickly discover that there are alternative ways of addressing the situation. They will learn to improve the quality of their own lives, which often gets lost when families are trying to come to terms with addiction.
